Detox Water and My New Friend

Hey everyone!

I finally have a chance to post about something related to health and wellness. That’s half the reason why I haven’t posted lately – I’ve been lazy and not eating right and PMSy and emotional. Ladies, you know how it is.

But I today as I was groggy at the grocery store at 7:30 AM because I didn’t have any coffee, I decided to make something that I made a long time ago and A) loved and B) don’t know why I don’t make it all the time. I’m talking, of course, about detox water.

It’s super easy to make and has a ton of health benefits. All you need is lemon, cucumber, mint leaves, and water. What can detox water do for you? Here is a short list, taken from a more extensive list at Healthy Holistic Living:

1. Hydrating: Cucumbers are mostly water, so obviously pairing them WITH water is a huge plus for your body. Water helps nutrients go where they need to go, so staying hydrated is extremely important for optimal health.

2. Relieve puffiness: the anti-inflammatory properties in cucumbers can help with this.

3. Cancer fighting: According to Healthy Holistic Living, “cucumber are known to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. These three lignans have a strong history of research in connection with reduced risk of several cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer.”

4. Aids in weight loss and digestion: This water, with it’s high nutrient content and rehydrating ability, will help flush out toxins and excess water weight.

Here is the super easy instructions:

1. Slice cucumber and lemon thinly.

2. Place in pitcher with mint leaves.

3. Cover with water, chill for four hours or overnight.

And that’s it!

Not only is it super healthy, but it looks gorgeous too.

I also wanted to introduce my newest friend, Smokey Nemo. She’s a teeny little stray cat who followed me home from my neighbor’s apartment around the corner, and she has rarely left my porch since. So I am providing her with food, water, and a little bed while I search for someone who can take her in and get her all the care and shots and vaccinations she needs. She is sweet, loving, and fine with other animals (my dog and cat bolted onto the porch to meet her, she didn’t fight them or get scared at all!)

Yumday! It’s not Tribe…

…but it’s yummy!

I made my own hummus today, with a few tweaks. When I was vegan, hummus was a staple. I had it every day. I haven’t been able to buy it recently because it’s been going up in price as more people discover how awesome it is, and I know store-bought can have some preservatives I don’t want inside me.

So, I made my own, but since I don’t have Tahini and didn’t want to spent like $8 on a jar, I used mustard.

Yes. Mustard. Don’t hate. Appreciate. Especially if you’re allergic to sesame seeds.

Here’s the recipe, my homemade addicts!

Yummus with Mustard

1 can chickpeas

5 teaspoons mustard

4 tablespoons olive oil

3 garlic cloves (or more, if you love garlic. I do)

Lemon juice (I didn’t use it but it’s pretty awesome)

Yeah, so, throw it all into a food processor. Two things here: 1) I didn’t picture the olive oil, but you guys are smart people. I’m sure you can imagine olive oil in my fancy red spoons. 2) I don’t have a food processor. So this is a smoothie maker. It works the same it just takes a little extra effort.

So, run the food processor/smoothie maker until smooth. And you’re done.

That’s it. Hummus! Hummus for days! Well, this will probably last me two days at the most since I’m an addict.

I topped mine with some paprika.

So there it is. A perfect way to wind down a weekend. Yum yum yum.

Hi there!

I’m starting this blog because I want to share my enthusiasm for green living and eco friendly products, along with the new initiatives I am taking now that I live in Wilmington, NC, and have way more opportunities than I did in Charlotte. I work a day job so I’ll have to schedule my posts accordingly, but I’m extremely excited!

A little about me – My name is Stephanie. I’m 24, and I run another blog/business called The Missing Gypsy where I sell my cross stitch patterns and showcase my original and some un-original work. I’m a graphic designer at a publishing company in Wilmington, NC. I uprooted my life in Charlotte for a new job and so far I am loving it! I live in an awesome apartment with my boyfriend, a fat cat named Elliott, and a spoiled dog named Bodhi.

Why did I call this blog Unless? It’s all about The Lorax. Dr. Seuss has always been a huge part of my life, both in my values and an influence in my artwork. The Lorax in particular is my favorite, and that one line has been stuck in my head my whole life: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”

And it’s simple. All you need to do is care 🙂
